Muguthang Trek


Trek to Muguthang
begins from Thangu which is 30 km above lachen. This trek provides a fantastic mountain-views, glaciers, clear alpine lakes, rare flora and fauna as well as areas rich in wildlife and insights into the life of the Muguthang-nomadic Yak herders.

 

Kalapathar is half and hour drive from Thangu, here the road ends for Muguthang, a 3-4 hours trek will get you to Lhonak la [Pass] and a gentle walk down into the valley is Muguthang.  Here lives the nomadic tibetain yak herder. This yak herder live through out the year where the temperature mostly remains below sub zero level during winter.

 

Here you can stay with the Yak herder family and watch them making hand made cheese [Churpi], yak butter and yak milking. You will get a good glimpse of the North East flank of Mt. Khangchendzonga, Pyramid peak and many other peaks surrounding you. You will find yourself lost in the nature. Yak safari can also be arranged on demand during the trek. Muguthang is 4 days moderate trek.

 

This trek is recently opened and is close to the Tibet border. Summer is the best season and the valley remains accessible for visitors. The villages is visited by a very few tourist till today.
